Resin-salt plastic or polymeric reaction products are created by combining a resin, like polyvinyl alcohol, with a metal salt, such as sodium chloride, in a reaction medium while stirring and under conditions that prevent the resin from precipitating or separating from the reaction medium. Instead, the resin remains dissolved within the medium and interacts with the salt.

The quantity of salt used is at least 2.3 weight percent of the resin and is ideally introduced into the reaction medium all at once. The resulting reaction product is extracted from the mother liquor and is preferably rinsed to eliminate any unreacted substances and impurities. The resin-salt reaction product, mother liquor, and wash solution each have applications in the production of commercially viable products. Additionally, a salt resin device is utilized to wash the resin from wax jet, project, and next jet printers.
