Salt mines

Salt mines

The largest salt mine in the world is situated right here in Goderich, Ontario. This remarkable salt mine is found beneath Lake Huron. Its immense scale is difficult to comprehend: the mine reaches depths comparable to the height of the CN Tower. In 2014, as reported by the Toronto Star, the mine was generating an astonishing 2,600 pounds of salt daily—an impressive achievement for any salt mine. Remarkably, all this salt was uncovered by chance. In 1866, Sam Platt, the proprietor of a flour mill, was eager to find wealth in oil. According to Business View Magazine, Platt drilled down 1,000 feet beneath Goderich Harbour, where he stumbled upon a vast quantity of salt. Although he may have felt disheartened initially, he quickly recognized that he had discovered the first salt bed ever found in North America, a significant breakthrough. Indeed, Platt had uncovered the very edge of the Michigan Salt Basin, a geological region filled with various types of salt, along with bromine, iodine, and other valuable minerals. While there may yet be potential for oil extraction in some regions of the Michigan Salt Basin, it was not meant to occur during Sam Platt’s lifetime. Instead, he sold his find to entrepreneurs interested in mining the salt. The ownership of the Goderich mine changed a few times before Sifto Canada, now under its parent company Compass Minerals, began developing the largest salt mine globally. Over the years, Sifto Canada has expanded the mine by adding more shafts and boosting its salt output. As the demand for salt increased—especially for de-icing purposes—there has been a consistent and growing need in Ontario. Laboring in the Salt Mine When miners arrive at the Goderich salt mine, they still have to make their way down to their work area. According to Road Stories, there was once a bus system that transported workers down into the shafts, but now the mine has grown too large for that. Nowadays, specialized utility vehicles take workers to the specific shaft where they will be mining. In fact, dump trucks and other large machinery have been constructed inside the mine, as it would be too challenging to lower heavy equipment down. Consequently, enormous chambers have been hollowed out of the salt to serve as storage spaces for the machines, repair areas, and even lunchrooms for the staff. With the assistance of machinery and explosives, workers break apart massive blocks of salt. This salt is mixed with water and pumped to the surface, where mechanical evaporation purifies it. Since its inception, the mine’s 600 employees have produced roughly 150 million tonnes of salt. Compass Minerals anticipates that the Goderich site will continue to yield salt for another 120 years!.
