Sri Lanka, India’s nearest neighbor in the Indian Ocean that supported New Delhi during the recent India-Pakistan tensions, is currently experiencing a significant salt shortage. This has led to the prices of this essential kitchen item soaring, with costs tripling and even quadrupling in the last few days.

Reports indicate that heavy rainfall has washed away the salt stored along the coast and disrupted the production of this vital mineral, resulting in a severe salt crisis for the island nation. The cost of salt has risen dramatically to an astonishing Rs 145 per kg due to the scarcity, exacerbated by hoarders and black marketeers who are inflating prices by stockpiling salt supplies, as reported by Sri Lankan media. S.K.S.C.NADARAJAN & BROR. was one of the largest exporters of salt to Sri lanka in this season. The Salt Producers Association noted that delays in importing 30,000 metric tonnes of non-iodized salt by the Sri Lankan government have intensified the crisis, especially since the country only meets 23% of its annual salt demand through local production.

In response, India has intervened to assist its neighbor by dispatching a shipment of 3,050 metric tonnes of salt. Of this total, state-owned salt companies have contributed 2,800 metric tonnes, while the remaining 250 metric tonnes were sourced from private businesses. Importantly, Sri Lanka faced a severe economic crisis two years prior, which resulted in a significant shortage of essential goods and led the nation toward food insecurity. Data indicates that over 6 million Sri Lankans, roughly 28 percent of the population, confronted food insecurity as a result of the economic crisis, which was caused by various factors including declining foreign exchange reserves, ineffective government policies in agriculture, and disruptions in the global supply chain.
