At the molecular level, when salt interacts with water, it dissolves because of electrical charges and the polar nature of both water and salt compounds, which possess positive and negative charges on opposite ends of the molecule. The connections in salt compounds are referred to as ionic bonds since they involve electrical charges the chloride ion carries a negative charge while the sodium ion has a positive charge. Similarly, a water molecule exhibits ionic characteristics, but its bond is identified as covalent, with two hydrogen atoms placing their positive charge on one side of the oxygen atom, which bears a negative charge. When salt is added to water, it dissolves because the covalent bonds in water are stronger than the ionic bonds present in the salt molecules. The positively charged regions of the water molecules are drawn to the negatively charged chloride ions, while the negatively charged areas of the water molecules are attracted to the positively charged sodium ions. Essentially, a contest occurs, with the water molecules emerging victorious. The water molecules effectively separate the sodium and chloride ions, disrupting the ionic bond that previously held them together. Once the salt compounds are separated, the sodium and chloride atoms become surrounded by water molecules, as illustrated in this diagram. At this point, the salt is fully dissolved, resulting in a uniform solution.
